Project Sierra

Role(s): Narrative designer, writer, and general game designer

Game Description

Project Sierra is a multiplayer digital boardgame inspired by the novel The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. In it, players are pitted against each other to acquire the most gold by the end of the game – by any means necessary. The game is designed to be played by small groups of friends and aims to encourage moments of hesitant cooperation and inevitable betrayal. The game runs on a single device and can be connected to through a browser, similar to games like Jackbox.

Background

This game was created with a team of 6 students as part of my Major Qualifying Project at WPI. Our goal was to emulate a small independent games studio and develop a working game by the end of the year. We worked on it over the course of 9 months, starting with a paper prototype before eventually building it up in Godot. As the sole narrative designer and writer on the project, I was tasked with designing a set of playable characters with unique backgrounds, writing in-game descriptions, and helping to ensure that every playthrough of the game was engineered to create memorable stories for the players.

Characters

Project Sierra has a running total of 6 playable characters, each with their own unique playstyle. We wanted every character to have the potential for both cooperation AND betrayal, keeping players free from being boxed into the “good” or “evil” role automatically. Each character was written with a short description that would be visible on character select, two ability descriptions for in-game reference, and a longer backstory that could be read in an “Extras” section accessible from the main menu.
